In 1889, F. R. Kimber and F. E. Vancil opened Peoples Furniture Company in south St. Joseph, MO. with a store full of furniture and the motto "We can furnish your home complete." Kimber and Vancil's trust in people made it company policy to provide "selection, price & terms to fit every ones budget."

In 1939 a young John Furlong began working at Peoples as a salesman and deliveryman. For ten long years John scraped & saved and was finally able to purchased the company from Kimber & Vancil in 1949.

John carried the Peoples philosophy of "selection, price and terms to fit every budget." through the years. In 1971 the business grew to the point where John purchased the former Skateland building at 36th & Frederick, and moved the store there.

Today the third generation of Furlongs carry on the rich tradition established over 120 years ago. The Furlong family values each and every customer. They believe in providing the type of service that keeps customers coming back.
